Manufacturing & Production / Bill of Materials (BOM)

Engineering BOM to Manufacturing BOM Converter

Turn the engineering BOM into a shop-floor-ready manufacturing BOM - adding consumables, scrap factors, and packaging, regrouping parts by the operation where they're consumed - with a side-by-side diff an engineer approves before release.

What you'll build

Import an EBOM, apply your scrap/consumable/packaging rules, regroup lines by manufacturing operation, review an EBOM-vs-MBOM diff, approve, and export a clean MBOM CSV in your ERP's exact columns.

Before you start

  • A free Supabase account
  • A free Vercel account
  • A free Resend account
  • Your EBOM as a CSV or Google Sheet export
  • The column names your ERP expects for an MBOM import

The problem this kills

Engineering hands you a clean, tidy EBOM - parts organized the way the product was designed. But the shop floor doesn't build it that way. Before anyone can cut, weld, or assemble a thing, somebody has to translate that EBOM into a manufacturing BOM: inflate quantities for scrap and yield, add the glue, solder, tape, and shrink wrap that engineering never lists, fold in packaging, swap out "phantom" sub-assemblies that don't really get stocked, and regroup every part under the operation where it's actually consumed.

Today that translation lives in a hero engineer's spreadsheet. It's slow, it's error-prone, and when the EBOM revs, the whole painful exercise starts over. A missed scrap factor means a stockout mid-build. A forgotten consumable means a line stops. And there's no clean record of why the MBOM differs from the EBOM when someone asks six months later.

What you'll build

A small internal web app where you import an EBOM, maintain a simple ruleset (scrap percentages, a consumables list, phantom mappings, packaging), and get a proposed MBOM back automatically. You see it side by side with the EBOM as a clear diff - every added line, every inflated quantity, every regrouped operation flagged. You approve, and the tool exports an MBOM CSV in the exact columns your ERP wants to import.

What's inside the Implementation Plan

The plan opens by interviewing you about your business - your products, your EBOM columns and SKU conventions, your operations and routings, your scrap and yield reality, your consumables and packaging, and your phantom assemblies. It reads a short tailored spec back to you and waits for your thumbs-up before it builds anything, so the tool fits how your plant actually works instead of a generic template.

From there it walks you, one copy-paste prompt at a time, through: standing up the app with login, building the EBOM importer, the ruleset editor you maintain yourself, the conversion engine (scrap math, consumables, packaging, phantom flattening, operation regrouping), the EBOM-vs-MBOM diff screen, the human approval gate, and the ERP-shaped CSV export. Every step ends with a prompt you paste straight into your AI coding agent.

The governance it includes (this is the point)

  • Login so only your engineering team can use the tool.
  • Row-level security so you only ever see your own organization's BOMs.
  • A full audit trail - who imported, who changed a rule, who approved which MBOM revision, and when.
  • A hard human-in-the-loop gate - the tool drafts the MBOM; a real engineer reviews the diff and approves before it's released. Nothing becomes a released MBOM automatically.
  • Duplicate guards so the same EBOM revision can't be released twice (dedupe key = MBOM revision + operation + child SKU).
  • Traceability - every MBOM line keeps a clear link back to the EBOM line it came from.

Who it's for

Manufacturing engineers and process engineers who bridge design and the shop floor - the people who today own the spreadsheet that turns "as designed" into "as built." If that's you, this tool takes the riskiest, most repetitive part of your job and turns it into an import, a review, and an approve.

You've got this - paste the first prompt and let the interview tailor the rest.
